Microsoft Surface 2.0: From ‘Minority Report’ to Reality

The Designer Tech Series is supported by the exquisitely crafted, new 2013 Lincoln MKS with Lincoln Drive Control. Now it gets interesting. The idea of surface computing — interacting with gestures, movements and objects, is quickly moving from the big screen (a la Minority Report) and into reality. From smartphones to tablets to thermostats, touch is becoming the computing input mechanism of choice.

With Surface 2.0, Microsoft is actively taking surface computing to the next level.

First released in 2008, the Microsoft Surface was a tabletop touch computer with support for multi-touch and multi-gestures. Additionally, the original Surface had built-in cameras that could capture objects placed atop the tabletop device and project elements of that object back to the user.

At CES 2011, Microsoft unveiled the Surface 2.0. Partnering with Samsung, the Surface 2.0 is cheaper, faster and thinner. Gone are the bulky cameras and the heavy DLP display. Instead, a 40″ 1080p screen is fitted with a sheet of Gorilla Glass. The device can sit on four legs. Because the new SUR40 is only 4″ thick, users can also mount the device on a wall for more standard kiosk-style interactions.

Last month, Samsung started accepting pre-orders for the Microsoft Surface 2.0 SUR40 in 23 countries. The list price in the United States is $8900 and stores, hospitals and restaurants could start receiving their devices by early 2012.

Top Five Regrets of The Dying

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.

People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learnt never to underestimate someone’s capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

Should the sting of sharp December pierce the heart of June, What death and devastation would ensue! All things are planned. The most majestic sphere that whirls through space is governed and controlled by supreme law, as is the blade of grass which through the bursting bosom of the earth creeps up to kiss the light. Poor puny man alone doth strive and battle with the force which rules all lives and worlds, and he alone demands effect before producing cause.

How vain the hope! We harvest joy until we sow the seed, and god alone knows when that seed has ripened. Oft we stand and watch the ground with anxious brooding eyes complaining of the slow unfruitful yield, Not knowing that the shadow of ourselves keeps off the sunlight and delays result. sometimes our fierce impatience of desire don’t like a sultry May force tender shoots of half-formed pleasures and unshaped events to ripen prematurely; or we rot the germs with briny tears ere they heave time to grow. While stars are born and mighty planets die and hissing comets scorch the brow of space the Universe keeps its eternal calm. Through patient preparation, year on year, The Earth endures the travail of the Spring and Winter’s desolation. So our souls in grand submission to a higher law should move serene through all the ills of life, Believing them masked joys.

So sound the trumpets and let the lions roar for we are victorious for now. Just remember to be great full for what we have now

For Victory is not forever! Only ruins will remain if we are lucky but our legacy will last forever!

The Reverse Graffiti Project

This is massively dope.

This video first surfaced in 2008 and could qualify as "throwback Thursday" material. The self proclaimed "Professor of Dirt" Paul "Moose" Curtis and crew took to the streets of San Francisco as part of the Reverse Graffiti Project creating beautiful images throughout the city by cleaning dirty walls with pressure washers and stencils instead of tagging them with spray cans and acrylic. It was later revealed that the project was part of an ad campaign but no hating from this end. Advertising or not, it just goes to show that the tools of artistic expression are not limited to only paint and canvas. -Reprint Vans OTW

In December of 2010 Burn Energy Drink (A Coca-Cola Brand) put out a call for treatment submissions for a series of web films they were commissioning. Having recently worked with the young producer/MPC (Music Production Center) savant Araabmuzik, Director Alec Sutherland was inspired to create an installation that could be a real time, visual articulation of Araab’s actions on the MPC. The treatment for this idea was submitted and selected by Burn.
With a modest amount of money, Alec and his crew set forth to build a light setup that would converse instantly with Araab’s MPC. After a week of troubleshooting an array of computer software, DMX controllers, Midi converters, dimmer pads, electrical latency, power conversions, finally a pad on the MPC was pushed simultaneously lighting a single LED strip. 16 LED lights were custom wired and fabricated.
The shoot lasted two-days: the first spent documenting Araab in everyday situations accompanied by audio excerpts from a candid interview. The second was spent at Broadway Stages in Greenpoint Brooklyn, building the light setup and finally, recording Araab’s performance.
What you see of the performance is about three and half minutes of excerpts, taken from a nine minute set. Each set was shot on 4 cameras to enable a live, real time edit of Araab’s performance. The 16 lights are triggered exclusively by Araab’s actions on the MPC, the result being a precise visual translation of the music he’s creating.
This film has been completed for months but we were unable to release it do to Burn’s brand repositioning. Recently, they gave us a choice: release the film now on your own, or wait until August when Burn/Coca-Cola will put their corporate weight behind it. We have decided to release it now because we would like people to see it as something other than an advertisement. Thank you and we hope you enjoy.
