An awesome tidbit I learned about Rodin last semester is that he was considered the father of Modern sculpture. Why? Because he explored the idea of what it meant to be a sculpture. What figural elements were unnecessary, and could be eliminated, while the overall piece still communicated the essential. Here are examples of this idea in his work. Can arms be missing and still show a human form? Legs? Head?
